First Horizon began as the former First National Bank of Memphis, which by the late 1970s was operating throughout most of the state of Tennessee as First Tennessee National Bank. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the bank sought to expand beyond the borders of Tennessee, and changed the name of its parent company accordingly. The First Horizon brand began as a financial loan and insurance company, and in 2003 became a traditional bank. The bank continues to operate as First Tennessee within the borders of the Volunteer State. The company’s name was changed from First Tennessee National Corporation to First Horizon National Corporation in April 2003.
